This year, Acadia school is a Legacy School with the Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund. The Legacy Schools program is a free national initiative to engage, empower and connect students and educators to further reconciliation through awareness, education and action (#reconciliACTION). At our last assembly, we were introduced to Chanie Wenjack’s residential school story, and next week students will take community walks and reflect on Chanie’s story. See more information at https://downiewenjack.ca/
We are excited to announce that Acadia School will be partnering with Nation’s Vision, a portable eye care team that brings a full optometry office directly to our school. Please see the attached letter. Consent for the eye exams will come home next week. Please sign and return to school for a licensed optometrist to conduct comprehensive eye exams.
With Halloween and other fall celebrations approaching, we know that some families will want their children to wear costumes to school and some may want to save them for community events after school hours. On Thursday October 31, we welcome students to wear their costumes or pajamas to school if they wish. Students will have an opportunity to show their costume to the whole school community during a costume parade in the gym. When choosing a costume to wear to school please remember:
- Keep your child’s comfort and safety in mind for indoor and outdoor play. Make sure your child can wear a coat and indoor and outdoor shoes with their costume.
- Long capes, uncomfortable shoes, or other tripping hazards are discouraged. Students should be able to participate in gym and outdoor play safely throughout the day.
- Please ensure their vision is not obscured by their costume.
- Please leave loose props at home. We cannot be responsible for anything lost or left behind at the school before Halloween night and there will be no staff here to accommodate entrance to the school for any forgotten items.
- Do not send costume weapons to school (swords, guns, etc.)
- No extremely gory costumes. Please remember we have small children in the building, students, and staff with varying levels of sensitivity. We want everyone to feel safe and have fun!
As a reminder, we do not allow students to share food at school due to various food sensitivities and allergies. We kindly ask that this practice be extended to after-school hours as well. If you wish to share food with other children, please ensure you have explicit permission from their parent beforehand. This will help us maintain a safe and inclusive environment for all children in our community.
Do you have a student in Grade 1, 2 or 3? Are you new to Canada and looking for a school program to support your child’s transition to Canada?
