WAG Nov. 6-10 | School Council, Community News
This week was very exciting for us at Acadia School. The students had a festive week with many fall or Halloween activities going on throughout the school.
A reminder that our school has an active and vibrant School Council and everyone is welcome! You are already a member if you have a child attending Acadia School. The next meeting is Wednesday November 8. We encourage you to come in to the school and get to know your neighbours and community members! If you are unable to attend in person, we do offer a hybrid meeting link: November School Council Meeting
Important Reminder: this is the first year for a Fall Break on CBE traditional calendars. The last day of classes is Wednesday November 8. Classes resume Wednesday November 15.

Calgary Housing Strategy- 2024 – 2030
Last month at a special meeting of Council, The City of Calgary’s Housing Strategy was approved.
During three days of meaningful and passionate public participation and debate at the Community Development Committee, more than 160 residents and groups generously shared their experiences with Calgary’s housing crisis and their opinions about the recommended actions in the Housing Strategy.

Housing Needs Assessment
The City of Calgary has published the 2023 Housing Needs Assessment. The latest data shows that more Calgarians are struggling with housing affordability.
The findings show the current housing crisis is affecting Calgarians looking to buy or rent a home. Those that are in greatest need of affordable housing supports are also affected.

Métis Week: November 12-18
This year Métis Week is being co-hosted by the newly appointed Otipemisiwak Métis Government: Métis Nation Battle River Territory – Calgary Nose Hill Métis District 5 & Calgary Elbow Métis District 6 and is an opportunity for all Calgarians to better understand the history, culture, and current day aspirations of the Métis people in Alberta as they transition to a Constitutionally recognized government.
For more than 20 years The City has formally proclaimed the week through the City of Calgary’s proclamation process, and flag raising. By doing so, the City recognizes the significant role that Métis people have played in Calgary, and the contributions they continue to make to our great city.
Calgary’s proclamation & Flag Raising- Everyone is welcome!!

For information on other events please visit Métis Week - Rupertsland Institute and Métis Week 2023 - Métis Nation of Alberta (albertametis.com).
Did you also know that Louis Riel Day is held every year on November 16? November 16 is the anniversary of Riel’s execution in 1885. Louis Riel led Métis people in the Northwest Resistance, which was a stand against the Government of Canada because it was encroaching on Metis rights and their way-of-life. Every year, Louis Riel is honoured on this day for his bravery and for protecting and standing up for rights of Metis people.
Public Engagement Connect: an Opportunity to voice your ideas on Parks Planning
Parks and Open Spaces is creating the next 20-year plan on how we develop, redevelop, and manage parks to better connect with Calgarians with nature, wellness and each other.
The second round of public engagement for the Connect: Calgary Parks Plan. There will be eight virtual sessions (Virtual Information Sessions | Connect: Calgary's Parks Plan | Engage & Online Coffee & Conversation | Connect: Calgary's Parks Plan | Engage) and nine in person engagement events (Open Houses & Pop-Ups | Connect: Calgary's Parks Plan | Engage) for Calgarians to participate and provide their voice.
There are also 'sounding boards' set up in several parks across the city (Sounding Boards | Connect: Calgary's Parks Plan | Engage).
Engage has also provided an online survey (Connect: Calgary's Parks Plan | Engage) for all Calgarians to provide their feedback.
All of these portal pages will open from now until Friday, November 10.
October was Awareness on Poverty Month
Although the month has gone by, the many initiatives related to this are still valid and the information is important.
“Mayor Jyoti Gondek has proclaimed October as End Poverty Month to raise awareness. It is centred around the United Nations International Day for the Eradication of Poverty held every year on October 17.
Vibrant Communities Calgary (VCC) is a non-profit organization seeking to engage Calgarians in advocating long-term strategies that address the root causes of poverty in Calgary. Vibrant Communities Calgary (VCC) was incorporated on April 15, 2005 to help steward Enough for All, Calgary’s poverty reduction strategy.”

Basic Living Shouldn’t be a Luxury: Unaford- Parody Luxury Storefront
“Vibrant Communities Calgary (VCC) has launched a parody luxury storefront that treats the items required for everyday living, such as bread, eggs and toilet paper, as luxury items — because, for many Calgarians, they are. The storefront, ironically named Unaford and complete with all the elements of a high-end boutique, including a security guard, drives home the message that basic living shouldn’t be a luxury.
The activation was created to raise awareness of this crucial issue facing Calgary right now — poverty. Since 2021, the rising cost of living (+6.9%), increased housing costs (+6.2%), food prices (9.7%) and stagnant wages (>1%) have brought many Calgarians to their financial breaking point.”
