General Health Measures
In all matters of health, CBE takes direction from Alberta Education and Alberta Health Services. Find out how you can reduce the spread and lessen the impact of illness in school communities.
Routine Immunizations
The CBE supports the AHS school-based immunization program.
Safety
Student Illness or Injury - If a student is ill or injured, an attempt will be made to contact parents. Students who become ill may be taken to the nurse’s room until parents can be contacted.
ANY kind of injury to the head area is considered a serious injury. If a parent or sitter contact cannot be made, and the injury is deemed serious, an ambulance will be called. Parent’s work number, home number, or emergency contact numbers will be phoned by office staff in the event of any serious injury.
Allergies
Please notify the school immediately if your child has a severe allergy. The school will need to have additional information. A Student Health Plan form must be completed.
We try to ensure a peanut/nut safe environment, as we have several students and staff with severe allergies. Please keep this in mind while preparing student lunches/snacks. Thank you for helping us keep everyone safe.
Medications
Medication should be administered to children outside of the school hours, if at all possible. Should your child need medication at any time at the school, a Student Health Plan form must be signed in the school office. We cannot give children medication without this form, and we have no medications available at the school. All medications will be kept at and given out in the main office. Medication should be in the original container with your child’s name on it. If you must make other arrangements for storage of the medication (example asthma puffers) please contact the office and indicate this on the form.
School Nurse
The school nurse visits Acadia approximately a half a day per week. The nurse is an excellent source of information for public health concerns, and can help you and your child in a variety of ways. Services provided by the public health nurse in schools include:
- Immunization and control of communicable disease.
- Working with students and families to address physical and emotional health concerns.
- Providing consultation to teachers in the area of health education.
- Participating in health promotion activities such as injury prevention programs to improve the overall health of the school community.
Students, parents and school personnel may use any of the services provided by the public health nurse.
Lice
There may be times during the school year when we have cases of head lice.
If your child has head lice, please contact the school and let us know. If your child has been exposed to lice at school we will notify you.
As a precaution, we ask all parents to check their child’s head frequently for a few weeks after any exposure. You can find more information on lice from myhealth.alberta.ca.
